For those that ascribe to Christian teaching, today is the day that love won the war on death.
For me, today is the day that love won the war for my affection.
Jesus intentionally broke Levitical laws to have us fix our eyes on him instead of following the law. Are you paying attention? We are free from Levitical law, we are free to love, and we are free from the power of death!
I walk the earth, light streaming from my eyes, and love pouring from my mouth. My arms have become the gateway to heaven; my tongue has become the architect of peace.
There is no greater love than this. There is no greater model of love than in Jesus’ relationship with the Church.
Even when the Church hates him, he loves them. Even when the Church lies about the depth of his affection, he loves them. Even when the Church rejects, and humiliates, and destroys humans, he still loves them.
But he also loves us, and through the cross, he destroyed hierarchy. There is now Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female–there is God, and there is mankind. That is the only hierarchy left after the cross.
Woe to you, Phariisess, keepers of the law, religious bigots, self-appointed gatekeepers to the Kingdom of God, consumers of the fruit from the fated tree which allowed you to set yourselves up as judge, jury, and executioner.
Woe to you, destroyers of Easter Sunday, of the holy day in which Jesus defeated death for all mankind and invited us only into holy community with himself. Woe to you, slaves of the law, capturing and enslaving others to the law. Woe to you, interpreters of Scriptures who divorce holy text from its historical context. Woe to you, self-proclaimed rabbis with yokes of unbearable weight. Woe to you, cowards in the face of Jesus Christ’s untamable complexity.
WE ARE FREE, AND WE ARE PROTECTED BY THE GREAT KING WHO WENT TO WAR WITH DEATH AND EMERGED VICTORIOUS.
